Sounding Board

‘Sounding Board ‘ is a sounding board for where I have got to in my work. It is also the linking element and architectural framework for a selection of studio objects to test their potential to signify; it is a structure for a system of signs.

That is what my current series of work is sounding out – can communication ever take place? But let’s not leave it up to us: the utensils made me do it.

In my work I attempt to find a way of working with materials and objects that approaches something more like a collaboration with them; that refines a sensitivity to what those materials and things might ‘require’ of me. Can I be a better listener, a sounding board for them?

Nurturing an approach that fosters imaginative openings into a more ‘primal’ and evolutionary process of making and thought, by ‘thinking through materials’ [1], I hope to reinterpret my function amongst my materials as an orchestrator of possible outcomes.

This is - I seem to think - an ongoing, intuitive contemplation of semiotics, and the impossibility of meaning…

This suggests that we do not think about things so much as through things.’  Briony Fer, in essay on Gabriel Orozco, 'The Scatter; Scultpure as Leftover’. p224, in Part Object, Part Sculpture, Helen Molesworth ed., Penn State Uni Press 2005.
